Robert has dedicated much of his career to fighting for vulnerable populations and representing noncitizens of limited financial means in civil cases requiring them to defend complex deportation proceedings without counsel. He has received numerous awards for this work, including:

  • A 2021 Founders Award from the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), which was renamed the Robert E. Juceam award, and recognizes a person or entity that has made a substantial impact on the field of immigration law or policy.
  • A 2017 John H. Pickering Award by the Senior Lawyer’s Division of the American Bar Association, which recognizes outstanding lawyers or judges with a record of service dedicated to improving access to justice for all.
  • A 2015 Presidential Citation from the American Bar Association, "for his irrepressible passion for advancing immigration reform in the United States; for his infinite determination and distinguished leadership in advancing the ABA's role in ensuring fairness and due process for immigrants and asylum-seekers; and for his countless notable achievements as President of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and Chair of the ABA's Coordinating Committee on Immigration Law."
  • A 2013 Chesterfield Smith Award from the Pro Bono Institute (PBI) in recognition of his dedication to pro bono and public service.
  • A 2010 Lifetime Achiever honor by The American Lawyer for his life-long commitment to pro bono work, and more specifically, immigration matters.

Robert has also received honors and awards from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Center for Constitutional and Human Legal Rights, the Haitian Refugee Center, the Legal Aid Society, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the American Immigration Law Foundation, and The City University of New York Citizenship Now program, among others.

From 1995 to 2001, Robert chaired the Litigation Department in our Washington, DC office.
