In Memoriam – Joshua Mermelstein (1955-2021)

Joshua Mermelstein
 was a real estate partner resident in Fried Frank's New York office. He joined the Firm in 1981 and became a partner in 1986.

During his 40 years of practice at Fried Frank, Mr. Mermelstein represented financial institutions, owners, developers and offshore investors in connection with financings, joint ventures, acquisitions and dispositions, development and construction, and fund formations. He also assisted clients in sophisticated out-of-court loan restructurings and workouts with a concentration of restructuring experience in office buildings, assisted living facilities and hotels.

Some of the many clients that Mr. Mermelstein represented over his long storied career include Brookfield Office Properties, Brookfield Asset Management, RXR Realty, China Investment Corporation, Millennium & Copthorne Hotels, Firmdale Hotels and Atria Assisted Living. Joshua Mermelstein

Many of his projects changed the skyline of New York City including Battery Park City, Manhattan West and countless other office developments across the city.

Mr. Mermelstein was consistently recognized by Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business as a leading individual in Real Estate and by Legal 500 in Real Estate.

Mr. Mermelstein was a member of the New York City Bar Association, the Real Property Law Section of the New York State Bar Association and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He was a director of the Board of Directors of Selfhelp Community Services, Inc., a member of the Board of Trustees for Beth Israel Center (a New York synagogue) and a member of the Executive Committee of the Lawyer's Division of the UJA.

Mr. Mermelstein received his JD from Columbia University Law School in 1980, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and his AB from Columbia College in 1977. He was admitted to practice in New York.

Mr. Mermelstein passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2021. He was an outsized presence in the real estate industry and a friend and mentor to many.
