Kira M. Whitacre, litigation associate in Fried Frank's New York office, has been elected to join the Junior Advisory Board of Her Justice. She will join other junior board members to support and advance the mission of Her Justice. Ms. Whitacre served as a Fried Frank extern for Her Justice, where she served as lead counsel on litigated divorces and custody matters. During that time, she worked on the landmark case, Alice M v. Terrence T., 2015 NY Slip Op 51913 in which State Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Sunshine determined that a man serving 40 years in state prison for raping his wife is not entitled to share her pension or any other marital asset in their divorce.
Fried Frank's chairman David J. Greenwald currently serves as a member of the Her Justice Board of Directors. Additionally, real estate litigation partner and co-chair of the Firm's pro bono committee Janice Mac Avoy serves as Fried Frank's Corporate Partner Representative for Her Justice.
For nearly 20 years, Fried Frank's pro bono program has supported Her Justice by taking on numerous family law and immigration cases for women from underserved communities in New York. The Firm also continues to be a proud corporate partner and a major institutional supporter of the organization.
Her Justice recruits, trains and mentors caring and talented attorneys from law firms around New York City to provide free legal services—focused on family law, divorce and immigration— to low-income women, many of whom are survivors of domestic violence and immigrants isolated by language and culture, empowering them to overcome poverty and abuse and transform their lives.
