The American Lawyer recognized Fried Frank in two categories of its 2014 Global Legal Awards, which aim to honor all law offices—including in-house departments—that played a substantial role in the most distinguished cross-border work performed between January 1, 2013, and April 14, 2014, across a wide range of disciplines.
In the “Global M&A Deal of the Year: Europe/Ireland” category, Fried Frank was recognized for its representation of Perrigo, a maker of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, in the financing of its US$8.6 billion deal to acquire Elan Corp., a biotechnology company and developer of multiple sclerosis treatment Tysabri. Corporate partners Stuart Gelfond and J. Christian Nahr and tax partner Robert Cassanos worked on the matter.
In the “Global M&A Deal of the Year: China Private Equity” category, Fried Frank was honored for its representation of the buyer group consortium in Focus Media Holding Limited's US$3.7 billion privatization. Focus Media operates China's largest lifestyle targeted interactive digital media network. The buyer group consortium included the chairman of Focus Media and affiliates of The Carlyle Group, FountainVest Partners, CITIC Capital Partners, China Everbright Ltd. and Chinese conglomerate Fosun International Limited. Fried Frank also provided fund-related advice to certain consortium members.
The Focus Media matter is China's largest leveraged buyout in history.
