Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP litigation special counsel Jennifer Colyer is the recipient of the 2014 Pro Bono Liaison Award presented by Her Justice, recognizing her as one of the organization's most active and supportive law firm liaisons. Formerly known as inMotion, Her Justice provides free legal assistance in family law, divorce and immigration to low-income women living in New York City.
As pro bono counsel in Fried Frank's New York office, Ms. Colyer is responsible for directing the overall pro bono program and supervising individual pro bono projects handled by other attorneys at the Firm. Ms. Colyer specializes in immigration and criminal defense and LGBT rights cases; in addition, her extensive litigation experience includes a broad range of civil matters as well as substantial work on investigations brought by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, United States Attorney's office and other criminal and internal investigations.
For more than 18 years, Fried Frank's pro bono program has supported Her Justice by taking on numerous family law and immigration cases for women who have suffered from domestic violence. The Firm also continues to be a proud corporate partner and a major institutional supporter of the organization:
- Corporate partner Robert Schwenkel currently serves as a board member.
- Bankruptcy and restructuring partner Brad Eric Scheler is chair emeritus and currently a member of the Senior Leadership Council.
- Litigation partner Janice Mac Avoy currently serves as a member of the Corporate Partners committee and also supervises a team of Fried Frank attorneys who regularly volunteer their time and expertise.
Also, in 2005, the Fried Frank Fellowship was established to allow Firm associates to spend a year working full-time at Her Justice. This program, which the Firm continues to sponsor and fund, has allowed the non-profit to retain and provide counsel on numerous matters and assist those in need.
Ms. Colyer will be honored at the upcoming 2014 Commitment to Justice Awards, a ceremony held at Lincoln Center to celebrate the commitment of volunteers who have donated their time and expertise to help women and their families receive much needed legal support.
