On Thursday, February 28, 2008, Fried Frank will be honored with the Excellence in Legal Service Award at MALDEF's Ninth Annual Washington, DC Awards Gala. Founded in 1968, MALDEF is the leading nonprofit Latino litigation, advocacy and educational outreach institution in the United States. Its mission is to foster sound public policies, laws and programs to safeguard the civil rights of the 45 million Latinos living in the United States and to empower the Latino community by focusing on employment, education, immigration, political access and public resource equity issues.
The relationship between MALDEF and Fried Frank has been bolstered by the Firm's MALDEF fellowship program which gives an entry-level lawyer the opportunity to spend two years as a Fried Frank litigator followed by two years as a staff attorney with the nonprofit institution. Through this partnership and litigation Partner Janice Mac Avoy's participation on the MALDEF board, Fried Frank and MALDEF continue to create unique programs that effectively bridge the worlds of private law firm litigation and public service law.
